Giving - A Case for Private Support

Giving Read AloudImagine a world in which every child entered school on level footing, ready to learn and able to excel.

In such a world, a larger percentage of children would complete high school and graduate college. A greater number of educated, qualified individuals would enter the workforce. Crime rates would be lower. This is the vision and very reachable goal of the Children’s Learning Institute (CLI) at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston (UT-Houston). CLI brings together the best and brightest from the fields of medicine, education and child development to provide proven learning solutions derived from, and supported by, documented research.  CLI’s mission is to create a quality learning environment for all children through classroom curriculum, teacher mentoring, clinical programs and applied research. Our goal is to make sure every child is equipped to learn and able to excel.

Making an Impact

  • In 2003, CLI was named by the governor of Texas as the Texas State Center for Early Childhood Development
  • CLI’s pre-kindergarten initiative, known as the Texas Early Education Model (TEEM), served more than 46,000 children across 38 Texas communities in the 2007-2008 school year
  • Through the Texas Reading First Initiative, CLI has trained thousands of Texas teachers in effective reading practices
  • CLI provided continuing care for more than 1,700 children’s developmental, psychological, and educational needs through the Dan L. Duncan Children’s Neurodevelopmental Clinic in 2008
  • Of the approximately 20 magnetoencephalography (MEG) labs in North America, CLI’s lab is the only one that has developed the capability to efficiently scan children’s brain for diagnosis and research
  • CLI’s faculty is nationally recognized for advancing research in brain behavior, specifically in children and adolescents with learn- ing differences
  • CLI is internationally recognized for its scope of research from infancy through young adulthood
  • CLI is a leader at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in securing federal competitive grants, such as National Institute of Health funding, receiving $8.1 million in fiscal year 2007
