Rapid Vocabulary Naming Assessment
The Rapid Vocabulary Naming Assessment evaluates a child's ability to name common objects. The
Rapid Vocabulary Naming Assessment is timed and should be considered a combination of verbal fluency
and expressive vocabulary.
- Flip the pages at least every three seconds. (This takes practice!)
- Do not give any hints to the child.
- Do not have the child name the pictures from the handheld screen.
- If the child says nothing, tap
and flip to the next page.

to set the correct date and time. (see tab 2 - Setting the
Digitizer/Setting The Date & Time)

understands the Vocabulary task.
- Read the prompts to the child.
- Tap
to advance.
- Tap
to start the timer.
- This task measures how many pictures a child can name in one minute
as a gauge of their vocabulary. Flip the pictures to the child as
fast as she can say them.
- Score each item Correct or Incorrect by tapping the large buttons. If
the child makes an error, but you grasp the child knows something
about the object, score the response as a Sensible Error. You can
review these Sensible Errors later to learn more about the patterns
and connections the child is making. Answers given in another
language may be recorded as sensible errors. Sensible errors are not
counted as correct.
- If the child takes more than 3 seconds on any picture, the Incorrect
button will flash to alert you to score the item incorrect and move on.

- If the child gives the word in a different language, you may ask the
child, "Do you know the word in English?"
- Be careful not to spend more than 3 seconds on any one picture. The
goal is to give the child a chance to name as many pictures as possible
in one minute.
- When 60 seconds are up, tap
.
- The results screen is shown.
- Immediately see how many pictures the child named correctly and the
number of Sensible Errors.
- Tap

. Refer to the Rapid Letter Naming
instructions where these features are described.
- Tap
to review them on the Sensible Errors screen.
- Sensible errors are counted as incorrect.
- Once this results screen is done, you may not make any changes to
this child’s assessment for this time of year.
Responses shown are acceptable answers. However, children will continue to make novel responses that
are not included on the answer sheet. When in doubt about whether or not to give credit for an item
(e.g., object is a "camera" and the child says "camcorder"), do not give credit.
