Dr. Marcia Barnes is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas-Houston Health Sciences and Adjunct Scientist in the Program in Neurosciences and Mental Health at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. Prior to her move to the University of Texas in the fall of 2008, she was a Professor of Psychology and held a University Research Chair at the University of Guelph.
She studies academic skill development and learning disabilities in mathematics and reading comprehension in preschoolers and school-age children. She has a special emphasis on learning difficulties in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network.
She served on the Ontario Ministry of Education’s expert panel on special education that produced Education for All: Literacy and Numeracy Instruction for Students with Special Education Needs. She is a co-author with Jack Fletcher, Reid Lyon, and Lynn Fuchs of the book Learning Disabilities: From Identification to Intervention and has also published articles for educators on closing the achievement gap for young at-risk children.
